Race Medley

Equipment Needed

2 Bowling Pins (substitute poles for bowling pins if needed)

2 Sacks

2 Egg on Spoon

Rope (to tie people together for the 3-legged race)

Setup

Establish a starting line.  Put one bowling pin

25 feet* away from the starting line.  Put the

other bowling pin 50 feet from the starting line.

*Feel free to adjust the distance so that it’s age and ability appropriate

Object of the game

Complete each of the three races as fast as you can

Almost Verbatim Rules (don’t read words inside parenthesis aloud and feel free to pause for questions after each rule)

  • Ok everyone – I need you to split into two teams. Team 1 will start on the left and Team 2 will start on the right.  We’re going to race two or three different times at this station.  Race #1 is the Sack Race (have them line up and pass out 1 sack to first person in line on each team).
  • When I say go, you’re going to race around the pins Figure 8 style (explain to them what that means if its unclear).
  • Please be careful not to bump the other team while you’re going around the pins. Remember, the first team to have all their teammates hop across the finish line wins (Start the race).
  • Ok now – Race #2 is the Egg on the Spoon race. You’re going to go around the pins again Figure 8 style.  If you drop the egg, there’s a 3 second penalty.  You must freeze for 3 seconds after picking up the egg (Start the race).
  • Now, Race #3 is the 3-legged race. Please choose a partner you would like to race with against the other team.  Once you’ve chosen a partner, we’re going to tie your legs together with this rope (tie legs together).
  • Same rules, Figure 8 style (Start the Race).

*For best results, try to make sure the partners are around the same height.

Points

  • Award 1 point to the team that wins each race

Obstacle Course

Equipment Needed

2 plastic ladders

50 ft of String

5 Pool noodles

Stakes

5 Hula Hoops

Setup

Left size:

  • Place two plastic ladders next

to each other (for high knees football drill)

  • Place 5 hula hoops in a staggered line

about 3 feet apart* (for frog jumping)

*Feel free to adjust the distance

so that it’s age and ability appropriate

Right Side:

  • Place green stakes in the ground in

two parallel lines about 6 feet apart.

Tie the stakes together in a random

pattern (for military style crawl)

  • Bend Pool Noodles into a U shape

and stake them into the ground

(to create hurdles)

Object of the game

Complete the obstacle course as fast as possible.

Almost Verbatim Rules (don’t read words inside parenthesis aloud and feel free to pause for questions after each rule)

  • Ok we’re going to split you into two teams. Team 1 will start on the left and team 2 is going to start on the right (line up teams in 2 lines).
  • Team 1 is going to start on my left. Team 2 listen carefully, because you’re going to do the same obstacles, but in reverse.
  • First, you’re going to high knee yourself through the ladders. Knees to chest if possible. (older kids only: If you touch the ladder, you’ll have to start over.)
  • Then you’re going to run to the next obstacle and jump from hula hoop to hula hoop. (older kids only: If you touch the ladder, you’ll have to start over.)
  • Next you’re going to run through the obstacle course inflatable as fast as you can
  • Then you’re going to military crawl under the string
  • And finally you’re going to jump over the pool noodle hurdles
  • Again, Team 2, you’re going to do the same thing but just in reverse
  • When you finish all the obstacles and cross the start line, the next person from your team will start.
  • If at any point 2 people are attempting the same obstacle, the person who gets there 2nd has to wait for it to be completed before they can start the obstacle…except when that obstacle is the inflatable obstacle course in the middle. Two people can share that obstacle (get teams ready and start).

Points

  • Award 3 points to the team that wins and 1 point for the 2nd place team.

Object of the game

Hop forward through the hoops as fast as you can until you’re in the hoop next to your team.  Play Paper, Rock, Scissors to determine who has to hop out of line, and who keeps jumping.  The player who makes it to the starting line of the other team scores a point for their team.

Almost Verbatim Rules (don’t read words inside parenthesis aloud and feel free to pause for questions after each rule)

  • We’re going to split you into two teams. (stand each team at one end of the hula hoops.
  • At the start of the game, the first person from each end will start hopping through each hoop until they are in hoops right next to each other.
  • When that happens, a battle starts, and you must play rock-paper-scissors until someone wins.
  • Whoever loses the battle must run to the back of their team’s line and let the first person in line on their team try and stop the winner from reaching their starting line.
  • If at any point in the game one of you battles their way through the opposing team and reaches the hoop at their starting line, then that team scores a point for their team.

Connect 4 Basketball

Equipment Needed

Connect 4 Basketball poles

42 basketballs

Sandbags / Weights

6 cones

7-15 feet from the free throw line.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBN_oPT_7q4

Assembly of the game board

There are two sets of 8 poles that are approximately the same size.  Connect those poles together first.  Grab the 2 of longer sets of poles and place them in the base joint (the one without the big curved end on it) to create the foundation.  Now, attach the four smaller sets of poles to the foundation to create the base.  Add pole with the big curved end to the base and add the last two sets of long poles to finish the frame.  Lastly, slip the Velcro game board onto the big curved poles and attach Velcro to all of the poles.  Once assembled, create a free throw line 8-15 feet from the game board and place sandbags/weights on the foundation to prevent it from tipping over.
