Want to join us?

Help us bring the fun to play deserts in the Cleveland area (and soon in other cities). Choose a role that best suits your passions.

Champion

Requirements:

  • Must be able to explain and enforce rules to the game you're organizing
  • Must be comfortable working with large groups of people from all backgrounds.

It would also be great if:

  • You wanted to borrow some of Recess Cleveland's equipment to help us organize games in neighborhoods around the city.
  • You are willing to throw on a referee shirt and help us referee games.

Ringer

Requirements:

  • You'll help keep the games going by jumping in to play any game that doesn't have enough players.
  • You'll help our staff recruit players for any new games that are launched at the event.
  • Wear plain clothes and athletic shoes. You're an incognito volunteer 🙂
  • Cheer on both teams and maintain positive energy as you play.

Muscle

Requirements:

  • You'll help our staff lift things and put them in place for the event (or put things back in the truck at the end of the event). Some things are heavy, but most things are on wheels.
  • You'll also ensure that all items we bring out are age-appropriate, disinfected, and safe to play with.

Glue

Requirements:

  • You'll champion the registration tent to assist families with signing waivers or man the entrance/exits of our bounce houses to ensure everyone inside is playing safely and they don't get overcrowded.
  • You'll also be responsible for giving away the prizes to competition winners.

Griot (aka Storyteller)

Requirements:

  • If there aren't any pictures or videos, then it didn't happen correct? The Griot(s) will use their personal phones to take and share photos of the most exciting moments from the day's events.
  • The Griot will transfer pictures to the Recess Cleveland photo album and also share experiences that stuck out to them with our staff.

Auditor

Requirements:

  • Provide an outside view of the effectiveness of our programming during a camp, day of play, league play, or series of events.
  • Record what you saw on a custom rubric. Offer ideas that can strengthen our programming which in turn we will convert into solutions, together.

Fundraiser

Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable assisting our staff with performing various fundraising tasks (including but not limited to: Developing marketing materials, writing thank you letters, conducting intake interviews, inviting friends to crowdfund, etc).
  • When contacting potential donors, you must be able to manage the contact process and assist with asks.

Recess Cleveland offers a wide variety of individual activities and team games that require a lot of people to teach participants how to use the equipment and play the game and to offer encouragement to the people we serve. The more people we have, the more games we can play, the more individual attention we can offer to the participants who need it most.

Safety and fun are our biggest priorities.

Volunteers make it possible for Recess Cleveland to meet our goal – providing a safe, fun environment to promote play for adults and children. The more eyes we have on the play area, the better we can ensure everyone is having fun and staying safe.

Our volunteers work as a part of a team. Working together makes us a stronger team – we learn about one another, watch out for each other, and we play together.

We all bring something different to the table. Some people are better teachers, learn more here, others are better at resolving conflicts. Some volunteers immerse themselves in the team games, others prefer to work with participants one-on-one. Having volunteers work where they really shine brightest is what makes Recess Cleveland such a huge success!
