The goal of 60 Days of Summer Recreation is to provide 60 opportunities for families to increase public participation, stimulate emotional growth, and promote physical activity in areas lacking positive environments for recreation using our pop-up recess events. At our pop-up recess events, we focus on playing large-scale games that have a low barrier of entry and require a unique combination of skill and teamwork. Our events start with ‘old school recess’ — where we drive to a vacant outdoor space, setup an art space, announce our presence with fun age appropriate music, and setup our recreational equipment (Frisbees, ‘Skip its’, hula hoops, Bounce Houses, inflatable basketball courts, inflatable soccer courts, Zorbs, etc.) for the community to use. During our events, play is unstructured, and attendees are encouraged to use their imagination and creativity to create their own games while meeting other neighbors. When there are enough participants, our Recess Coordinators begin organizing group games like Capture the Flag, Soccer, Battle Ball, Battle Soccer, Kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, Joust, Bounce House Dodgeball, Whiffle Ball, and more. In between games, we create contests where often the winner receives tickets to a local attraction. With the support of food donations from individuals and other community organizations we often share food. Last summer we fed over 1000 of the 5000 attendees.
Recess Cleveland has HUGE plans for 2019. After a successful 2018, that featured 75 events and over 7000 attendees, we’re planning to throw 60+ FREE Recess events this summer alone and bring the fun of Recess Cleveland to over 10,000 people in 2019…yes, TEN THOUSAND kids (and adults).
But we need YOUR help to reach our goal…
